Bathtub Replacement Options

8 minutes read

If you’re ready to replace your tub “just because” or as part of a larger bath remodeling project, you might be in awe of all the shapes and sizes they come in these days.

While the designs have evolved, the core material choices generally come down to three major contenders: Porcelain over Cast Iron, Fiberglass, and Enameled Steel.

Which material is right for your home? Let’s break down the differences to help you decide.

Porcelain Over Cast Iron

Cast iron has been the trusted material for bathtubs for hundreds of years. It is widely considered the gold standard for durability and that classic, solid feel.

Here are the main reasons homeowners continue to choose cast iron:

  • Longevity:

    • With proper care and maintenance, a cast-iron tub installed today can easily last 50 years or more.

  • Durability:

    • These tubs are coated with porcelain (enamel), which maintains a beautiful glossy finish and resists chipping, scratching, and fading.

  • Heat Retention:

    • Cast iron retains heat better than almost any other material, keeping your bath water warmer for much longer.

  • Style:

    • From claw feet to pedestals, cast iron offers a timeless aesthetic that complements high-end bathroom designs.

However, that durability comes with a few trade-offs you should know about:

  • Cost:

    • A cast-iron tub can easily cost more than twice its fiberglass or steel counterparts. If you are renovating a bathroom that gets little use, it might not be worth the investment.

  • Weight:

    • Iron is incredibly heavy. This makes installation a challenge, especially in tight spaces or on upper floors where floor reinforcement might be needed.

  • Rust Risk:

    • Because iron and water don’t play well together, it is crucial to keep the often-uncoated underside of the tub dry to prevent exterior rust.

If the weight or cost of cast iron is a dealbreaker, but you still want that classic look, there is a middle ground.

Enameled Steel

If you love the aesthetic of cast iron but aren’t ready for the heavy price tag (or the heavy weight), enameled steel is a strong contender. This material essentially bridges the gap between fiberglass and cast iron.

This material offers several compelling benefits:

  • The “Cast Iron” Look:

    • To the naked eye, a steel tub looks almost identical to a cast-iron tub because they share the same porcelain enamel finish.

  • Affordability:

    • Steel tubs are significantly more affordable than cast iron, making them a great budget-friendly alternative for a premium look.

  • Weight:

    • While heavier than fiberglass, steel is much lighter than cast iron, making it easier to maneuver and install during a remodel.

But before you commit, keep in mind that lighter weight means different performance specs:

  • Heat Loss:

    • Unlike thick cast iron, steel is thinner and does not hold heat well; your bath water will cool down much faster.

  • Durability vs. Cast Iron:

    • While the surface is hard, steel is more prone to chipping than cast iron. If a heavy object is dropped in the tub, the steel can flex slightly, causing the enamel coating to crack.

  • Noise:

    • Without proper insulation or spray foam underneath, steel tubs can sound hollow or “pingy” when water hits them.

If customization and budget are your top priorities, or if you have a difficult floor plan, you might want to look at the most modern option.

Fiberglass

Less expensive, readily available, and offered in a massive variety of styles, fiberglass bathtubs are a practical choice for many homeowners. They are created by painting a mold with a polyester resin.

Why do so many renovations feature fiberglass? Here is why:

  • Versatility:

    • Fiberglass can be molded into almost any shape. This makes it a great choice for openings that do not fit standard-sized bathtubs, as well as extra-large or oddly shaped custom designs.

  • Ease of Installation:

    • Because they are very light in weight, fiberglass tubs are the easiest to carry and install.

  • Low Maintenance:

    • You can simply wipe off dirt and soap scum with a mild cleanser and a rag.

Of course, the lower price point reflects some limitations regarding longevity:

  • Durability:

    • While they are significantly cheaper than cast iron or steel, fiberglass has a lifespan of only about 15 years.

  • Cleaning Sensitivity:

    • Hard, abrasive cleansers can scratch the surface coating. You must stick to gentle products like dish soap and water.

  • Porosity:

    • Over time, the surface can become porous. If not cleaned frequently, it can absorb moisture and create mildew problems.

Summary: Which should you choose?

  • Choose Cast Iron if:

    • You want a “forever” tub that keeps water hot and adds value to your home, and budget is not a primary concern.

  • Choose Steel if:

    • You want the glossy, high-end look of cast iron but need a lighter, more affordable option.

  • Choose Fiberglass if:

    • You need a lightweight solution, a custom shape, or a cost-effective option for a bathroom that doesn’t require a 50-year lifespan.
